Clean Face For Big Ben!
We all need a wash and brush up and this week it was the turn of Big Ben our famous clock at the Palace Westminster, London, SW1.
Cleaning the face of this huge clock takes more than a few moisture wipes that us girls use. Specialist cleaners abseil down the face and check for damage whilst making sure its face is clear of bird and wind damage.
It’s a dangerous job and the plucky cleaners have to wear ear defenders to protect themselves from the deafening clocks chimes.
Clock Facts – It’s the largest four-faced chiming clock and the third-tallest free-standing clock tower in the world. It celebrated its 150th anniversary in May 2009 – that means it began ticking on 31 May 1859.
The designers were the lawyer and amateur horologist Edmund Beckett Denison, and George Airy, The Astronomer Royal.
