EastEnder Star Awarded Freedom of City!
We Supreme69 girls love watching TV soap, EastEnders when not working and it was with delight that I heard main lady, Barbara Windsor (72) received the Freedom of the City of London. She was awarded the honour at a presentation in the Guildhall in Central London earlier this week.
She now says, “At last I’m truly posh, my mum would be so proud.”
Freedom of the City, is one of the oldest surviving traditional ceremonies still in existence today and is believed that the first Freedom was presented in 1237.
The medieval term ‘freeman’ meant someone who was not the property of a feudal lord, but enjoyed privileges such as the right to earn money and own land. Town dwellers who were protected by the charter of their town or city were often free – hence the term ‘freedom of the City’.
Personally I can still remember watching her in those good old carry on movie spoofs as per our photo left, when I was a little girl and she was far from posh. I can vividly recall all the guys leering at Barberas massive chest that she somehow managed to squeeze into some horrifyingly tiny tops. Perhaps it was this vision that got me into the industry that I’m in today.
